To the average eye most people would see a professional athlete as someone who worked hard to get to their level and only see money.
However with many athletes comes their background and history of their lives. An example of this I have seen is with FIFA, the Federal International of Football Association, and their problem with Mesut Özil.
A former german national team soccer player. Mesut Özil born in october 15, 1988, gained rising popularity when he transferred from Werder Bremen, a first tier division in the German league, to real madrid on august 17, 2010, for a fee of 18 million. This would start the rise and peak of his career giving the club 1 spanish cup, 1 spanish super cup, and 1 spanish champion.
Özil would then be transferred to a first tier division in the english league named arsenal, for a fee of 47 million. He would be an amazing player for the team, winning his first world cup internationally, 4 english fa cups, and 2 english super cups, until one day during the first few months of 2020 on social media.
Özil would public tweet out disapproving China’s treatment of the Uighurs, a largely Muslim minority in the region of Xinjiang.
Fifa and their understanding of this problem would be to not mention this and give a punishment to Mesut Özil
This would lead to a Rabbit hole of him and damage to his club, he would then be benched for the rest of the season, lose six million followers, and be erased from anything related to soccer in China. losing even more fans in China, refusing pay cuts and eventually retiring.
